  • Manufacturing waste ? in house recycling
  • Legislation in destination market

Check

  • How can I advise my client?
  • How long will product be used for?
  • Where will it be sold? e.g.: NZ, Europe?
  • How will it be disposed of?
  • Can it be recycled? ? is there a recycling collection available
  • Can we reuse this plastic?
  • How will it be recycled? Mechanical, flotation?
  • Can the plastics type be identified easily?

Plastics Recycling

New Zealand Plastics Recycling

50% of Councils in New Zealand now have kerbside collections for PET (1) and HDPE (2). They are looking to expand these but recyclers want to have defined markets for this material first. Most other recycling is commercial collection. The bulk of this is commercial film. There are several niche businesses reusing other materials.

NZ Plastics Packaging Recycling 2007 Targets
  • 40% of all PET (1) packaging
  • 40% of all HDPE (2) packaging
  • 25% of all LDPE (4) packaging

These targets will be agreed to under the Packaging Accord agreement with government.

Business Opportunities
  • Market recyclability
  • Save money by using recycled materials
  • Provide take back schemes

International Trends

  • Packaging industry covenants (Netherlands, Australia)
  • Mandated beverage container deposits (some USA states, South Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, UK)
  • Mandated take-back responsibility (Germany, Austria, France)
  • Mandated recycled content (some USA states)
  • Material / Product Bans (PSP, plastic bags)
